Way back in 1815, William Kirkland of Ayr, Scotland, built this Federal-style plantation. For a time, it fell into disrepair, but has since been lovingly restored with original furnishings and period-correct antiques. What does it have to do with the great outdoors? The immaculate grounds are breathtaking. This is the perfect place for a stroll on a nice day, where you’ll feel like you’re going back in time.
This is a great spot for NASCAR fans and nature lovers, too. That might sound like a contradiction, but it makes perfect sense. Occoneechee Speedway is the only surviving racetrack from NASCAR’s inaugural season, and you can still see the original grandstand, vintage signage, and other relics of the birth of this wildly popular motorsports organization. These days, the track is a beautiful hiking trail, perfect for a jog or a walk with your favorite four-legged friend.
At the Eno River State Park, you’ll find a beautiful landscape, picturesque waterfalls, plenty of boulders to climb, and a variety of trails suitable for hikers of all levels, as well as the historic ruins of the old mill. Eno River is a great place to spend a sunny day.
